Aranjuez is a locality to the south of Madrid, bathed by the waters of the Rivers Tajo and Jarama. It forms part of the select club of Royal Seats, Spanish Heritage Sites. It is a place with many points of interest for tourists, given that it was the spring residence of the Spanish royal family in the 17th Century.
During the Middle Ages, a large house was built there to serve as a hospital for convalescing knights, wounded fighting against the Muslims during the Reconquest. Later, the Catholic Monarchs turned the hospital into a palace, and the whole area into a Royal Seat. From then until the 19th Century it was the spring residence of the Spanish monarchs. Felipe II built the Palacio Real de Aranjuez on the site of an ancient palace. Its marvellous, tranquil gardens, worthy of a King, are of exceptional beauty; monuments such as the Palacio Real, Casa del Labrador, fountains etc are the flag-bearers of a peaceful town that comes back to life every summer with the numerous visitors who arrive looking to enjoy its wonders, gastronomy and the hospitality of the locals.Location: Plaza de Parejas, s/n.
