Chinchón is a city to be found in the south-east of the Comunidad de Madrid; it is beautifully sited in the Tajo-Jarama basin, and a visit is recommended. The muncipality, as pretty as its surroundings, has a curious central square, which deserves to be enjoyed.
The Plaza Mayor de Chinchón has a classical Middle Ages style in popular architecture. It is irregular in shape, of great simplicity and with a clear, organised lay-out. The first houses were built in the 15th Century and had colonnades and balconies, although it would not be finished until the 17th.
The buildings have three stories, with lintelled galleries and 234 wooden balconies all supported by shod right feet. Since its construction it has served not only as the city's main square but also for the most diverse activities: executions, bull-fights, theatrical representations, royal parties and even as a film set.
At the end of the square is the majestic Iglesia de la Piedad, rebuilt several times; its style is Renaissance but also has Baroque, Plateresque and Gothic elements.
