The Castle of Manzanares El Real, in the locality of the same name, is situated on the southern flank of the Sierra de Guadarrama. It has an unbeatable location, given that it is between the beautiful scenery of la Pedriza and Santillana reservoir, dominating the middle valley of the Manzanares.
The Dukes of Infantado ordered a castle-palace to built there during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, as their personal residence. Its architecture is outstanding as it has the strength of a Medieval fortress and the elegance of an artistocratic Renaissance palace. The recinct is quadrangular, with three cylindrical cube towers at the corner, and a fourth, larger, one known as la Torre del Homenaje. One must not forget to visit the interior, which houses beautiful and valuable tapesteries, armour, furniture as well as objects from different eras.
The Castle of Manzanares not only forms part of Madrid's historical heritage, but is also linked to our region's recent history given that its halls saw the birth of the Statute of Autonomy of the Community of Madrid, approved by Congress and Senate in 1983.
