The residence-fort Castillo de Batres was home to Garcilaso de la Vega, the famous poet, born in Toledo in around 1501. It is one of the finest and most original castles in the Comunidad de Madrid, set in the town of Batres, municipality to be found in the south-west of the region, bordering Toledo and on the banks of the River Guadarrama, which provides it with great natural wealth. This sturdy brick building sits on flint foundations. The oldest part of the castle is the Torre del Homenaje, note-worthy for its proportions, harmony and forward-placement.
The castle is cuadrangular, with fine, elegant architecture and a certain military air. The shield of the Lasos and Guzmanes on the Elizabethan Gothic main gate is outstanding for its extreme delicacy. The courtyard has a Plateresque double gallery, with a Gothic well in the centre which still shows signs of the previous structure.
Location: Batres (Madrid).
