This locality in the Comunidad de Madrid can be found in the River Lozoya's wonderful valley, at the feet of the Somosierra Pass. Its geographic situation, on the south side of the Sistema Central, and layout, on one of the river's pronounced meanders, were strategic points during part of the Middle Ages.
For two hundred years it was an Arab fort, built with the idea of stopping Christian attacks from the north. But once conquered by the Christians, it was repopulated with shepherds and peasants from Segovia. In 1368, the municipality was given to Pedro González de Mendoza by Enrique II de Castilla, this family's ownership would last until the middle of the 19th Century.
The wall and castle next to the river date from this time, and they are still almost complete. Alfonso VI de Castilla also conquered this locality during the campaign that would take him to Toledo .
