The Puerta del Sol is one of Madrid's most famous spaces and the place the Madrileños meet. Two of the city's most characteristic symbols can be found here. The statue of the bear and strawberry tree, in bronze, was placed here in 1967. This image also appears on the city's shield. Another bronze statue is also worth mentioning, that of King Carlos III on horseback.
It has always been an access point into the city, although construction dates from the reign of Carlos I who ordered the building of a gate to serve as access to Madrid. it is located between Calle Alcalá and La Carrera de San Jerónimo. As it faces east, a sun was placed at the entrance, and thus the name. The square is surrounded by very beautiful buildings, the most important being that which presides over the square, known as la Casa de Correos, current site of the Presidency of the Community of Madrid, built between 1766 and 1768. The facade of the building, the city's first post-office, still keeps its clock, in its day that of Buen Suceso church. Almost the all the entire nation listens to its chimes at midnight on New Year's Eve. A popular custom is to eat a grape on each of the chimes, and tradition has it that if we successfully eat all twelve, we will have a lucky year.
Aside this, the square also marks Kilometre Zero, marked by a plaque in front of the Casa de Correos, this is the starting point for all Spanish roads.
