Madrid's Plaza Mayor is located in the very centre of the city, in the area that has become known as Austrian Madrid, very near la Puerta del Sol and la Plaza de la Villa. It was built between 1617 and 1619 on what had been la Plaza del Arrabal. Ever since the 17th Century, when festivals, bull-fights or solemn receptions were held there, it has been the incomporable stage for all kinds of public events.
The square is galleried, rectangular and completely enclosed by three-storey buildings which have numerous balconies. These are beautiful and majestic buildings, such as la Casa de la Panadería or la Casa de la Carnicería. The colonnades, supported by granite columns, house a good number of bars and restaurants, as well as philately, numismatic and souvenir shops. Nine gates give on to the square, one of the most important being el Arco de Cuchilleros.
