The name Plaza de Oriente comes from the site of this beautiful square in Madrid, given that it is located to the East of the Royal Palace. It was built under the mandate of King José Bonaparte, and, in order to enlarge the size and surrounding area, a number of buildings were demolished.
Calle Bailén separates the Palace from Plaza de Oriente. Currently, however, after remodelling work, the square perfectly matches the Palace's East Facade. The square's unbeatable location, next to the Palace and very near the Teatro Real and other monumental buildings, as well as the absence of traffic, make it a very pleasant place to stroll around and delight the senses.
King Fernando VI ordered the making of statues of all the Kings of Spain to decorate the Palace's cornice. They never occupied the planned space and were, instead, placed in different parts of the city, among them this wonderful square.
