This was the official residence of Spanish Monarchs between the times of Carlos III and Alfonso XIII; later it would serve the same function for the Presidents of the 2nd Republic. Since the 1940s, its custody and upkeep has been the responsibility of the State. As well as being open to visitors, it is kept for ceremonies and public acts involving King Juan Carlos I as Head of State. Of all the buildings constructed in Madrid during the 18th Century it is, without doubt, the most important. Its purpose was to show the people those reforms being undertaken and to symbolise, for other Monarchs, the greatness and strength of the Spanish monarchy.
The palace extends around a large cuadrangular central courtyard. The facades were made of granite, with white stone from Colmenar and marble used for the reliefs and details.
Behind the Palace, as an addition to this extraordinary building, we can enjoy a stroll through the Jardines del Moro. Their current lay-out follows English landscaping and still contains the two Tritones and Conchas fountains.
