During the first third of the 20th Century, Madrid wished to become a city that was open to the world and to modernisation. One of the results of this desire was intense building and infrastructure work.
The building's incomparable location on the corner of Calles Alcalá and Gran Vía, right in the financial and commercial heart of Madrid, and its size and beauty, mean that it is impossible to pass this building without stopping to admire it.
The construction of this impressive and original building involved the demolition of up to seven houses that occupied the site. The architecture is elegant, eclectic and exceptionally well-proportioned. Taking the building as a whole, an outstanding feature is the black slate dome with interleafing golden decorations, crowned by a wonderful winged Victory. A beautiful rotunda of paired Corinthian columns was built on the second floor. These robust columns support a third floor that is decorated with statues representing trade, agriculture, mining and industry.
